Hello, and welcome to this presentation on disaster recovery. In this presentation, we will outline a disaster recovery plan for the Vila Health Community, detailing how the plan will improve access to healthcare and lessen health disparities after a disaster. This presentation will also outline health and government policies that impact disaster recovery efforts and best practices in communication and collaborations that can improve disaster recovery efforts.
Public health catastrophes often have negative health impacts on communities. In the wake of these catastrophes, lives are lost, and communities are devastated. The Valey City health scenario details the far-reaching health effects of disasters on communities. It is a replica of how poor societal structures and inadequacy in disaster preparedness can impact the healthcare systems and have dire consequences on the community’s lives. As evident in the case, the derailment catastrophe that struck the community led to the loss of six lives and placed a considerable strain on the Valley City Regional Hospital. A disaster recovery plan (DRP) outlines a structured approach to regaining normalcy after such disasters. Finucane et al. (2020) report that an effective disaster recovery plan minimizes the health effects that disasters have on communities by mobilizing community efforts to preserve community lives. This highlights the significance of these plans in communities and care organizations.
Determinants of health are factors within the communities that make individuals healthier and live longer. The determinants of health outlined in Healthy People 2030 include access to healthcare and health services, biological and physical factors, and social factors. These factors form the groundwork for defining and designing disaster recovery plans. The effectiveness of a DRP will depend on how it addresses these determinants of health. By leveraging community resources such as healthcare organizations and tailoring recovery efforts to address these factors, communities and care organizations can successfully ensure that communities promptly regain normalcy after disasters.
